Sometimes the ideas come faster than I can paint them, so I have to write them down. I keep a little notebook of my ideas for watercolor paintings, so I don't lose track of them and can always consult my notebook to refresh and invigorate me. The sketch of a teddy bear painting had already been in my book for a while when some collectors of my work, who have since become friends, showed me the wall in their family room that needed a new Eva Farley watercolor.

When I saw the antique teddy bears on the bookcases I knew it was time to start painting bears. Because the painting was to hang in a family room, I didn't want it to look too "sweet." And I wanted some of the bears to look old and well loved, like the teddy bear my husband Neal has had since he was a baby. Since the look I decided on was nostalgic, I painted an old quilt behind the bears to add to that feeling. Other than the pale blue in the quilt I wanted to stay away from pastels.

I like the way the bears seemed to take on individual personalities as I painted them. Variety in color and texture adds to their charm. I loved painting enough of the texture of their "fur" so that you can see that they feel different to the touch.

The making of this print was more difficult than some because of the various shades of brown. The color correcting process took hours and hours, but the results are remarkable. It is a happy and charming print that would look great in a child's room or family room.
