Cab ClustersBefore painting Cab Clusters, I had painted some small watercolors of grapes. I liked them fine. But you know how some paintings just cry out to be BIG? This is what my fine little paintings were doing. So I decided to paint an over-the-mantelpiece-size painting of wine grapes. I already had a picture in my mind of the shape of the painting and the composition. But because I needed to see the details of cabernet clusters and leaves to make it believable, I used library books on wine making to view photographs of grapes on the vine. While I prefer to sit in front of my subject and paint it, since I didn't have an ideal vineyard in full fruit in my immediate landscape, this was the next best choice. I didn't "copy" any one photograph but rather used the information in several to create my own composition. I made the color of the grapes a little bluer than the photographic images to complement the orange/yellow area in the painting. That's what I love about watercolor: I have the power to mix just the right colors to make the painting work for me. |
